Kittens like to stay clean. Kittens have a natural instinct to do so. Getting your kitten started on litter training can be done quite young. A few basic tips can help get you started in helping and caring for your kitten.
Litter box location.
Make sure the litter box is in a low traffic area and preferably a quiet area. Don't put your kittens food near the litter box. Feed in a seperate area. Don't move the litter box around either. Keep it in one place to start a good habit. Try to not put the litter box on carpet either. You don't want your kitten associating bathroom time with the carpet.
Pick your litter.
If your kitten rejects the type of litter you have provided, try a different kind. Different textures and deodorizers can affect whether a kitten will be attracted. Clay litter can get in the paws. The annoyance or discomfort of clay particles in the paws can make a kitten stop using the litter box. Remember too, that multiple cats in one home may need multiple cat boxes. Cats like to be clean. It is something to keep in mind at all times.
Clean regularly.
Keep the litter box scooped regularly. Once a week clean out the box thoroughly to avoid any lingering odors. Smells can stick to plastic litter boxes, so every so often a good wiping down with a clean smelling deodorizer can help. Covered litter boxes trap more smells too, so make extra sure they are kept clean.
Kittens take quickly to litter box training with usually no problems. Not using the litter box can be sign of illness or distress. Contact your veterinarian if your kitten does not get into a routine. Remember that moving to a new home can stress an animal as well as an introduction of another pet. Kittens like to be clean. So cleanliness is the rule in getting kittens off to a good start. A few basics kept in mind should get your kitten off to a great start.
