Dental Care for Small Dogs

By HollywoodPet.net | Mon, 11 Dec 2006

Caring for a small dog has special concerns, and one of them is dog dental care. Small dogs under 20 pounds have a greater risk of developing dental problems. Because of a smaller mouth and crowded teeth, smaller dogs are more prone to having problems. No one likes to talk about dental problems, but every year many small dogs develop complications. Not overlooking this part of caring for your dog will reduce long term health problems and make for a happier pet.

The facts are staggering. Four out of five dogs have plaque buildup and periodontal disease by the time they are two years old.

Invest in a dog toothbrush.

As basic as it sounds, the crowded mouth of small dogs needs extra cleaning. Create a routine of brushing your dogs teeth using toothpaste or hygienic gel made for dogs. Regular dental care from your veterinarian is also needed.

Clean Water and exercise.

Clean water will reduce the amount of exposure to bacteria, promoting better oral health. Also, exercise will boost the immune system.

Diet

Feed a healthy diet to your dog. Gum disease can be brought on by poor nutrition. Don't give sweets to your dog either. Dogs run the same risk of getting cavities. Also be careful of extra hard chew toys that can chip or crack your dogs teeth. This is a quick way for your dog to develop gum disease. Also too, a constant diet of soft food can also lead to gum disease. Strike a healthy balance. Consult your veterinarian.

Watch for Symptoms.

In between check ups, keep an eye out for symptoms. This is where it gets ugly, describing the possible symptoms. Bad breath is a big clue. If your dog has bad breath, see your veterinarian. Look in your pets mouth for inflammation of the gums, discoloration, or ulcers on the gums. Keep an eye out for damage to teeth or gums, and look closely for foreign material between teeth or embedded in the gums.

The Risks.

The ugly truth is that oral problems can become more complicated over time. The risks are very serious. Your dog can develop difficulty in eating, low energy, and depression. Oral problems can lead to heart and kidney disease too.

Small dogs are a joy, but they have a much greater risk of dental problems. A toothbrush is the key to success. Your pet will adjust to the brushing routine in short order. Getting regular checkups with your veterinarian will keep your pet healthy for a long time.
