Choosing the right collar and fit for your cat is not complicated but is worth mentioning. Since cats are not walked with leashes as much, a cat collar is mainly for identification. Here are the simple basics.

Cat collars are used mainly for identifying your pet in the event it becomes lost. Most local laws also require that your cat be indentified with up to date tags showing vaccination for rabies and other diseases. This is the main use of a cat collar.

Your cats collar can be made of the materials, or of the design you choose. It is up to your taste and whatever makes your cat look good. The big requirement of a cat collar is that it is a "breakaway" collar. This type of collar comes apart easily should your cat get it caught on something, get into a fight with another cat, or catch on something when leaping or climbing. Cat collars are also called "safety" collars. Be sure it is the only kind of collar you put on your cat. A safety collar can prevent strangulation of your cat should it get into one of these situations. Cats can panic in these situations. Protect your pet.
Cat sizing.
Use a measuring tape or some other non-stretchy item to measure around your cats neck. Seperate the hair to get down to the skin. Add one inch to the measurement so your cats collar will be a little loose. If your cat gets into trouble, you want the safety collar to come apart, or the collar to slip off over the head. Remember, a cats collar can catch on something and will need to come off quickly. Make sure you can get one finger easily between the collar and neck.
Cat walking.
If you are training your cat to walk with a leash, never use a safety collar. Use a harness. Cats will walk with harnesses if they are acquainted with the harness over time. Start early with harness training and you will be able to walk your cat much like a dog.

Remembering to only use a safety collar or breakaway collar is the key to caring for your pet. A well picked collar will make your cat look handsome too.
