Cold winter and busy holidays means new considerations for your dog. Pets can often times be overlooked when there are many distracting activities. Seasonal changes and changes in routine mean looking out for your pets in a different way. A few tips of note can help avoid any problems.
Keeping your pets diet.
One of the biggest problems every holiday are pets getting sick from being fed different foods. Everyone likes to include the family dog or cat in holiday festivities. Resist the temptation to throw caution to the wind. Keep your pet on a good regular diet. Secure trash bags outside to prevent pilfering.
Keep your pet well identified.
Dogs and cats can both take on moods when a house is full of new guests and smells. Being left out of group events can be a big change in routine. There is a higher incident of pets becoming lost when the amount of attention or routines change. Make sure your dog has an I.D. tag.
Home safety.
Secure the Christmas tree from falling, and keep electric cords out of reach. Be aware that fireplaces, space heaters and candles all pose new threats to your pet and home.
Check your vehicle engine.
Pets will crawl into the engine compartment for warmth. Many pets are hurt when the vehicle is started. Look under the hood before heading out.
Winterize your dog.
Adjust the amount of food during winter when your dog is less active. If your dog is active in the winter, you may have to raise the calorie intake. Adjust accordingly. Protect your pet from the wind and rain too by winterizing the doghouse if your pet stays outside year round. Water bowls must not be allowed to ice over, bedding must be kept dry, and a door or flap on the doghouse is needed to keep out the cold air.
Holidays and winter go together, offering a few new challenges. Keeping your pet happy and safe will make you a good caretaker of your pet. Keep a special watch if your pet is exposed to wind and rain. Body temperature can drop quickly. A little bit of awareness will keep your pets safe and happy.
