How To Litter Train Your Kitten

By HollywoodPet.net | Wed, 27 Dec 2006

Cats are naturally clean creatures. Teaching them to use a litter box encourages and is an extension of this natural good behavior. Most cats will use a litter box unless it gets dirty. Here are a few tips to help keep your cat using the litter box all the time.

Pick out a litter box that's right for you and your cat. There are various types of litter boxes. There are big ones and small ones as well as automatic cleaning boxes that rake the dirty litter into a storage compartment. Disposable litter boxes with the litter already provided makes things easier too.

The right cat litter is something to be found easily too. There are a lot of different types of cat litter. Scented litter, non scented litter, and litter that clumps after being used are available. Change your cats litter every other day to keep things smelling fresh and clean. Finding the right cat litter that your cat likes the best is the key. If your cat doesn't like a change in the type of litter this can cause them to go in unwanted places. Cats with tender feet may prefer softer litter over clay litter too. Not letting the cat leave the litter box area when you know their bladder is full will help your cat realize what it is that you are trying to teach them to do.

Make sure the litter box is in a safe and clean area and away from lots of traffic but be sure your cats have access to it. Make sure cats also know where the litter box is located by showing it to them often in the beginning. If you have more than one cat try having more than one litter box too. Using the scoop you can scoop out the soiled litter. Put in about one inch of litter in the box. Never yell or hit your cat if they have an accident. Simply tell them "no" and place them in the litter box.

Don't place the litter box near food. Cats do not like to eat in the same place they have urinated. Cats will urinate in clean places such as your couch or carpet if they have a dirty litter box. Making sure that it is clean is very important in training your cat.

Cats need attention and sometimes will use the restroom in unwanted places due to lack of attention. If your cat feels neglected they will do things in response. You should spend daily time with your cat to make them feel loved and wanted. They will respond much better when you take the time to show them attention. One last thing to mention is that male cats should be neutered to help prevent them from spraying to mark their territory.

Litter training cats comes down to a lot of good basic information. Keeping the litter box clean is the number one way for your cat to use the litter box consistently. A minor bit of knowledge will make you and your cat much happier.
