How to Handle Strange Dogs

By HollywoodPet.net | Mon, 18 Dec 2006

Most dog bite incidents come from known dogs, but bites from strange dogs happen frequently too. Handling a strange dog means learning to diffuse an angry dog with the least amount of conflict. Avoiding a bite means keeping in mind a few basic rules.

Don't try to make friends with a strange dog.

An unfamiliar dog can spell trouble. Talking gently in an unthreatening way can give you clues to the dogs temperament. Don't push the friendship by insisting the dog smell your hand or getting down on the dogs level. Watch for clues and let the dog begin the friendship or don't make friends at all. Low growling, hair on the back standing up, and aggressive behaviour are signs of trouble.

Stand still.

If a strange dog approaches don't run away. Running kicks in their hunting instincts. Stand still until the dog loses interest. Generally they will smell you cautiously before walking away. If a dog is in full attack, defend yourself, or get away. This is the only exception to the standing still rule.

No reaching.

This is the biggest mistake people make. NEVER put your hand out. You interpret it as a sign of friendship while the dog sees it as aggression. This is one of the biggest ways people get bit by dogs. Don't put your hand out. Let the dog gain trust on its own terms. The dog will smell you several times while sizing you up as a potential threat. Putting your hand out at this time is the last thing you want to do.

Avoid eye contact.

Many animals view eye contact as a challenge. Don't make direct eye contact, but keep your body facing the strange dog. You can keep an eye on the dog while not being threatening.

Back up slowly.

Keep an eye on the dog while backing up slowly. Drifting away like this will help avoid a moment of conflict. As you recede, any perceived threat will also recede. Keep an eye on the strange dog as you move.

Defense.

If a strange dog knocks you down, play dead. Making noise and fighting back will increase the level of the attack. Cover your face too. If you are being fully attacked defend yourself and get away any way you can.

Most dogs are not aggressive. Aggression in dogs usually comes from fear of their territory being invaded, or perceiving a stranger as a threat. Keeping a distance is the best prevention of problems. It is worth repeating that one should never put out their hand to a strange dog. Knowing a few tips should help you remain safe.
