More Dangerous Things to Keep Away From Your Dog

Keeping your dog safe means awareness and prevention. A stray item left out can make your dog sick or even cause death. Be sure and read our other lists of dangerous things to keep away from your dog. A little bit of knowledge will insure your pet will be happy and safe.

Avocadoes.

The avocado, including the the pit and the actual plant are toxic to dogs. The symptoms of avocado poisoning include labored breathing. Take action if your dog injests, and call your veterinarian.

Moth Balls

Moth balls are highly toxic to dogs, and can cause tremors and seizures. Be very careful to keep moth balls out of sight, and out of reach.

Salt.

Table scraps can be loaded with salt, including chips are other snack items. Excessive salt leads to kidney problems. Be careful with the table scraps.

Pits and seeds.

Pear seeds, plum kernels, peach pits, apricot pits, cherry pits, and apple seeds all have chemicals that can poison your dog.

Nutmeg.

Nutmeg can cause tremors and seizures.

Sugar and corn syrup.

Avoid these entirely. Don't give sugar or corn syrup to dogs.

Tomatoes.

Tomatoes and especially the tomato plant should be kept from dogs. A racing heart and tremors can result. If your dog has a reaction call your veterinarian immediately.

Bones.

Do not give cooked bones to your dog. Cooked bones splinter easily and do permanent damage to your pet internal organs. Raw bones should be given under supervision only.

Coffee and Tea.

Avoid giving coffee, coffee beans or tea to your dog. The caffeine is bad for a dogs system.

Miscellaneous.

These dangerous items are listed as a group, but not because they are less dangerous.

Excessive fats and fried foods can damage your dogs pancreas. Table scraps are notorious for being high in fat. Keep fats to a minimum.

Rhubarb can be toxic to humans in large amounts. Avoid giving rhubarb to your pet. Also avoid broccoli, moldy or spoiled foods, alcohol, and yeast dough.

Other items to avoid.

Tobacco, including cigarettes and cigars can be quickly chewed by a dog. Keep them out of reach of your pet.

A small bit of prevention means your dog won't have any discomfort when being fed. Some of the reactions to items are extreme and require a veteranarian quickly. Avoiding these dangerous items is a good step towards keeping your pet happy and healthy.
