Protecting Yourself from Rabies

The mention of rabies is enough to make anyone think terrible thoughts. Very few people who have developed the symptoms of rabies have survived. Protecting your pet and your loved ones from rabies involves more than yearly shots. Remembering a few tips can insure no one is exposed.

Rabies is a terrible and serious viral disease that attacks the brain and nervous system. Keeping in mind the seriousness of rabies is vital when taking precaution to prevent exposure. Your pets need yearly shots and your children need to know the basics. Rabies exposure can come from a bite, or through the eyes, nose or mouth.

Avoid strange animals.

This means stay away from both wild and unfamiliar domesticated animals. Handling them and touching yourself can lead to disaster. Rabies can kill. Enjoy wildlife at a distance. Many wild animals are carriers of rabies.

Do not feed strange animals.

Feeding strange animals will only attract ones that are possibly infected.

Never handle bats.

Bats are carriers of rabies. Do not handle them. Remember too that a bat bite can go unnoticed because of the small mark it leaves.

Vaccinate.

Make sure all of your pets like dogs, cats, or ferrets are vaccinated as often as required.

Protect your children.

Do not leave your children alone with pets or animals. Any stray or sickly animals should be reported to animal control to protect your children and other children.

Take quick action.

If you are bitten by a strange animal, wash the wound immediately for 5 to 10 minutes. Have the animal picked up for testing if possible. Have the victim seen by a doctor immediately.

Remembering rabies is a deadly disease should be kept in mind at all times. Avoiding contact with strange animals is key. Quick medical attention should be taken if exposure occurs. Keeping your pets vaccinated is a positive important step too in keeping your pets and your family safe. When it comes to rabies, prevention pays off in a big way.
