Cats communicate in many ways. A cat is capable of over 100 sounds which is ten times more than a dog. But cats give signals in other ways too. A cats tail is a big communication tool. Here is a brief list of tail movements and positions that can help to know your cat better. The list is a good guide. Try a few and see if over time you find that you can read your cat better.
Tail erect with tip tilted.
Your cat is interested, friendly, and open. This is a friendly gesture with some reservations.
Tail fully erect.
Very positive greeting with no reservations.
Tail lowered fully or between legs.
Your cat is defeated or submissive. This shows low status or mild fear.
Tail lowered but fluffy.
Your cat is afraid.
Tail swishing aggressively from side to side.
Your cat may be about to fight or attack. This is an angry stance. Extra twitching can mean an aggressive act is about to happen.
Tail still with twitching tip.
Your cat is somewhat irritated.
Tail straight and fully bristled.
This is an aggressive posture.
Tail arched and bristled.
The cat is on the defensive.
Tail curves gently down with the tip up.
This is the sign of a happy cat.
Tail raised slightly but softly curved.
Your cat is interested in something.
While tail reading of cats is not a science, these tail positions can give you a clue into reading your cats temperament and mood. Some of these descriptions are very accurate while others are a little more subtle. Getting to know your cat is fun. The tail is but one way to read your cat. Hair, ear position, and pupil size are also indicators. Enjoy getting to know your cat.
