Bringing home a kitten is like bringing home a new baby. Good supplies will get you started right. A few tips can help prevent forgetting some of the essentials. Here is a list for making your kitten happier and for making your life easier.
Kittens need basic home and grooming supplies like any other pet. Part of being a good pet owner is making sure your kitten is cared for well. A few basics can help make things better for your new pet.
Personal items.
A kitten needs a breakaway collar with an I.D. tag. In the event your pet is lost, identification is essential. Other items would be a bed, a litterbox and soft or clumping litter. Remember that some kittens paw are tender and they don't like clay litter. Shallow food and water dishes that are not too tall for your kitten are needed. Kitten food needs to be chosen too.
Useful items.
A pet carrier is a must when bringing your kitten home or to your veterinarian. Traveling with a kitten or cat is made convenient with a pet carrier. It keeps them safe. Be sure to latch the door properly to prevent injury. It is never too early to get started with a scratching post. Kittens will instinctively start to claw the furniture if they are not directed to a scratching post. Start early to prevent bad habits.
Other important items.
Grooming supplies like brushes and flea combs will be needed. Starting grooming early will mean better relations later. Cats like to be groomed. Other great items would be a toothbrush and pet toothpaste, nail clippers designed for cats, and lots and lots of toys. Your kitten will have a lot of energy. Toys, toys, toys are the key to developing your kitten mentally and physically. Enjoy your kitten because they are only kittens once and be careful not to give small items to your kitten. Choking hazards are everywhere. Make sure your home is kitten proofed.
Going back to the basics is always a good idea. Some of the simpler items can be overlooked during the excitement of getting a new kitten. Starting your kitten early with grooming, scratching posts, and teeth brushing will help in having a well-behaved healthy cat one day. Enjoy your kitten.
