Having a cat as a pet is a joy, but like any other pet they have issues that sometimes need addressing. Most cat problems are remedied easily with a little knowledge, but for the pet owner who has never had a cat before here is a quick list of cat issues.
In general, cats are a very low maintenance pet who do well on their own. They can live indoors and are independent. But like all pets they can have personal and behavioral issues. Here are a few basics to keep future cat owners informed. Here is the Top 10 list of cat issues in no particular order.
Allergies.
Many people are allergic not to cat hair or cat dander, but interestingly enough they are allergic to the saliva left on the cats fur from self-grooming. A trip to the pet store will show if you have allergies, and proper grooming of your cat can reduce allergies.
Fleas and ticks.
Regular treatment and grooming is the key.
Scratching.
A natural behavior that just needs to be redirected. Setup a good scratching area.
Hairballs.
Grooming, flea and tick control, and enough oil in the diet will keep your cat happy.
Climbing.
Cats are climbers. Preventing mischief can be as easy as blocking your cats access to higher places or introducing more toys.
New cat.
If you have never had a cat, be prepared for a few laughs. The first time your kitten climbs straight up the curtains is always a laugh. Your adaption to a cat may take a little while.
Traveling.
Cats need a few extras for traveling, like a traveling crate. Changes in habits can upset them. A few accessories and a little knowledge will get you over this speed bump.
Night noise.
Cats are nocturnal, so when your cat starts playing with noisy toys at 2 a.m. it will be expected.
Health care.
Keeping up with vaccinations and regular care is a basic cat owners responsibility.
Housesoiling.
Proper litterbox setup and neutering can be helpful in this area. This is a subject a new cat owner should keep in mind to learn more about.
Caring for a cat has as many problems or issues as owning other pets. Knowing the issues that may present themselves will better prepare a potential cat owner. Many of the issues listed never become a problem. Enjoy your cat.
