Tips for Traveling with your Dog

By HollywoodPet.net | Sat, 16 Dec 2006

Taking your pet on a trip is a real joy. New places and smells make it a great experience for your dog too. While one on one time with your dog in new surroundings makes for great memories, a few preparations can make it even better. Your next road trip will be a real joy. So before hitting the road some great travel tips can help.

Make sure it's okay to bring your dog.

This is a biggie. Some people say they love pets until one arrives on their doorstep. Make sure you aren't setting up conflict with your hosts pets, and pre-arrange the sleeping arrangements. Allergies, other pets, and lack of space can make for a real mess. Get permission early that is sincere.

Bring a crate or portable gate.

A dog that behaves destructively while you are out can put a damper on relations. A pet gate or crate can limit where your dog roams. This can save you a lot of headaches by preventing damage. A bored dog in a strange place can put you and your pet in trouble. Dogs can act differently in new surroundings. Bring treats for positive reinforcement too.

Take your dog on outings.

Burning off your dogs energy is a winner. A tired dog is a well-behaved dog. Toys, including throw toys, collars, leashes, and walking shoes need to be packed. Bring a tie-out too for keeping your dog close in the yard or at the park.

Bring your dogs regular food.

Changing your dogs diet while traveling can make for a sick, or irritable pet. Keep your usual routines when it comes to feeding.

Keep it clean.

Paper towels, deodorizers, spray bottles can all help keep things clean after your pet. Coming prepared to clean up any messes shows respect for your host, and leaves a nice smell too.

Your nearest veterinarian.

Make an early note of where the nearest veterinarian is located. You never know when you will need it.

Pet Identification

This is where a second I.D. tag comes in handy. Your cell phone number on your pets I.D. tag can be a great help if your dog turns up missing. Make sure the rabies tag is attached too.

Other handy items.

Travel bowls, water, food placemat, and wet towelettes for wiping your dogs feet before entering your hosts home can be very handy. A towel for drying your dog or his paws after a rain is a winner too. Always have a multi-purpose doggie towel. Clean up bags for the trip and for keeping your hosts yard clean are great too.

With a little preparation, traveling and being a guest can be an easy experience. A little bit of preparation will make it less complicated while making it a fun experience. Be mindful of your hosts needs and have a great trip.
