Everyone loves puppies, but puppies can grow up into untrained dogs. The cute little ball of unfocused energy is a joy to have, but learning the basics of puppy training will allow you to enjoy your puppy while directing it towards good behavior. A few basics are all that is needed.
Start training immediately.
It's hard to imagine training a puppy but beginning early will get your pup off to a great start. Some of the most simple commands can be taught early. Early training effects the rest of a puppies life. Socializing your puppy will make it easier for it to accept other people and dogs too. Always train "with" your puppy, not "at" your puppy. Be patient at all times.
Develop routines.
Feeding, playing and exercise should all be done on a schedule. Your puppy will know what to expect. Eventually your pet will be able to predict when it is food time, play time or going outside time. The structure will help you greatly in teaching the first commands.
Positive Reinforcement.
Dogs and puppies know when they are getting positive reinforcement. Reward good behavior with vocal praise or treats. Praise is the best because treats can distract from whatever activity you are doing. Puppies like getting affection like scratching, rubbing, holding and especially honest praise. Try not to focus on the negative with repeated scoldings. Working for praise is one of the greatest rewards.
Learn about your breed.
Know as much as possible about your breed of puppy. Some breeds have inborn behaviors that are unique. Do a little study. Talk to a good dog trainer too.
Puppy training should begin early. Puppies are like babies that need correcting. Patience is the key for training your pet every day. Not accepting unwanted behaviour while giving positive reinforcement will give you a joy of a pet.
