Jogging with my dog is impossible

Everytime I try to jog with my dog, he takes off at a full tilt run. So we have two speeds, either walking or full out running. I end up with my dog sideways in front of me rather than to the side. I see people jogging all the time but mine just won't get the hang of it. This picture in my mind of me and my dog jogging harmoniously has never happened. Any ideas?

Try carrying a dowel, or stick. Not for hitting but for discouraging your dog from getting ahead of you. Hold the dowel in front of him to keep him even with you. Have you tried something like that?

Dowels are used in training dogs to guide them. Sounds like it will work. If not, you could be heading towards a "Marmaduke" moment.

Have you tried using a bicycle? You can attach the leash to a bike.

With a little practice, the bike attachment will work. It sounds like some good training would help.

There has been some improvement. The stick method for holding my dog back until he gets used to jogging evenly with me has worked. Thanks.
