Cat using bathroom on floor

Why does my cat spontaneously start using the carpet as the bathroom? Most times it's because the cat box needs cleaning, but sometimes there is no explanation. I would appreciate if anyone could explain this weirdness.

Once it gets started, it is hard to stop. Enzyme cleaners and repellant help.

Once a pet uses the bathroom on the floor, they keep going back to the same place until the smell is removed. It is hard to get the smell out too. Enzyme cleaners that break it down help a lot. Dogs and cats have such good noses. They can smell better than us. Even when you think you have it clean they can still smell the spot. Next thing you know, they get the spot associated as their new bathroom spot. It is like trying to break a chain. Without enzyme cleaners, the smell never goes away. You have to do a spot cleaning intervention.
