Mon Aug 28, 2006 3:34 pm What do do when guests are afraid of dogs?
I have two dogs, one a puppy and one more full grown, and was wondering what to do when a house guest is afraid of dogs? My dogs aren't mean, but some people just don't like dogs and seem anxious around them. What's the proper way to deal with this? Should I just tell them to get over it.

If the dogs are well-behaved try socializing them. Otherwise, if your guest truly doesn't want to be around them, I would get new friends, haha. Maybe just take the pets out of the room during the visit. I've noticed fear of cats seems common too.

I agree, get new friends.

Don't let your friends be anxious. There is a compromise in there somewhere. Slobbery dogs or smell dogs are definitely a nuisance. Try letting the dog out for a while. I am sure your pet will enjoy it and anytime a guest is uncomfortable, your dog might deserve a treat too for being so cooperative.

What kind of personality does your dog have? It sounds like your guests are a little shaky around pets.

Get over it? That's funny.

I have never heard dog fear as being such an issue. Maybe put the dog outside when you have guests and introduce your dog slowly.
